Large Group Lectures
Official Audio Prompt
Narration: Three students are having a group discussion about large group lectures. Speaker 1: You didn't attend the large group lecture this morning, right? The professor was really unhappy about that. You were supposed to sign the attendance sheet, since attendance is a very important part of our course assessment. The teacher will probably email you soon and ask you to clarify your absence. Speaker 2: Yeah, I know I missed the class, but honestly, I just can't stand those large group lectures at all. They are extremely boring because the professor just keeps reading from the notes the whole time. If it's only reading notes, I can totally do that at home. Personally, I find group discussions and seminars far more interesting and useful. Speaker 3: I totally understand your feeling, but there are still many benefits of attending offline large lectures. In this digital age, we already have very little face-to-face interaction. Most of our communication happens online through messages and virtual meetings. Large group lectures are precious opportunities for us to meet our classmates and professors in person and build better relationships with them. Speaker 1: Exactly. Even though lectures can sometimes be tedious, you still need to attend them regularly. When all students attend the lecture together, we learn the same content at the same time. After class, we can discuss the same questions, clarify our doubts together, and make sure we all grasp the key knowledge correctly, which is really hard to achieve if everyone studies separately at home. Speaker 2: That makes sense. I have never really thought about the value of face-to-face learning before. Even so, I still think large lectures could be much more engaging. If the professor could add more interactive discussions instead of simply reading notes monotonously, more students would be willing to attend every lecture actively. Speaker 3: I totally get your point. I also prefer small interactive seminars to traditional lectures. However, from the university's perspective, large group lectures are extremely cost-effective. It is much cheaper for one professor to teach over a hundred students in a big lecture hall than teaching a small class of only ten students. Speaker 1: Apart from academic consistency, offline lectures also help us keep a regular study routine. Studying alone at home often leads to procrastination, while attending fixed lectures can push us to follow the course progress steadily and avoid falling behind in our studies. Speaker 2: You're right. I admit that skipping lectures is not a good habit. Although online resources are convenient, they cannot completely replace the offline learning atmosphere. I will try to attend every lecture in the future and actively participate in in-class interaction. Speaker 3: That's great. Nowadays, even group study in the library lacks interaction, as everywhere is filled with students staring at computer screens. Therefore, offline large lectures are actually one of the few chances for us to experience real classroom communication and improve our learning efficiency.
