Society Participation
Official Audio Prompt
Narration: Three students are discussing whether new students should join societies at university. Speaker 1: I think every new student should join at least one university society. When I started my first semester, I didn't know anyone, but after joining the debating society, I made new friends and became much more confident. It also helped me improve my public speaking skills. Speaker 2: I agree that societies are useful, but I don't think everyone should feel pressured to join. During my first semester, I focused on adjusting to university life and managing my coursework. If I had joined a society immediately, I think I would have struggled to balance everything. Speaker 3: I can understand both views. I joined the environmental society because I enjoy volunteering, and it has been a great experience. We've organized tree-planting events and recycling campaigns, but the meetings are only once a week, so they don't interfere with my studies. Speaker 1: That's exactly why societies are valuable. They help students explore their interests outside the classroom. Universities have so many options, like music, sports, technology, business, and cultural societies, so everyone can find something they enjoy. Speaker 2: That's true, but some societies expect a lot from their members. My friend joined the student council, and she spends several evenings every week planning events. Sometimes she has to miss social gatherings because she's too busy with society work. Speaker 3: Maybe the problem isn't joining societies but joining too many. If students choose one or two clubs that genuinely interest them, they can enjoy the experience without becoming overwhelmed. Speaker 1: I also think societies can help students prepare for their future careers. Many clubs invite guest speakers from different industries, organize workshops, and provide networking opportunities. Those experiences can be just as valuable as classroom learning. Speaker 2: I hadn't thought about that. Perhaps universities should encourage students to attend a few trial meetings before becoming members. That way, they can decide whether the society suits their interests and schedule. Speaker 3: I like that idea. Joining a university society can help students make friends, develop new skills, and enjoy campus life, but it's important to choose activities that fit their interests and academic commitments. Finding the right balance is the key.
