Weight Loss
Official Audio Prompt
If you want to lose weight like many of us do, what do you do? Diet or exercise? Sorry to say I'm going to tell you the answer is probably both. If you're substantially overweight and have been exercising, you probably need to try to lose some weight first and then ramp up the exercise. Why not just diet? It's very popular there are lots of diets out there; they probably all will work to a certain extent but extensive studies now have shown that one thing that typically happens is when people lose a lot of weight they regain it. You've probably had this experience yourself. We're beginning to understand that is probably a natural response by our bodies which have somehow decided on a weight that they like. It's called the set point, and if you go above it, you tend to stay it..to come back down; if you go below it you come back up. So, one key is to try to change that set point. How do you change it? This is not so clear but I think increasingly research shows that exercise will help reset the set point. So, if you lose 20 pounds and start an exercise program you're more likely to be able to stay there. So, for the long term find an exercise program you can maintain and a diet or healthy diet that you can maintain over the long haul.
