PTE Exam Day Survival Guide: Microphone Placement, Background Noise, and Center Secrets

By PTE Shark Editorial Team•October 2026•9 min read

Exam day has arrived. You have studied the templates, practiced with AI, and reached your target scores on mock tests. Yet on the day of the exam, a poorly adjusted headset or the sudden roar of 15 other students shouting Read Aloud simultaneously in the test room can throw you into a panic. Here is your ultimate test-day survival manual to ensure your exam goes smoothly from start to finish.

1. The Two-Finger Rule for Microphone Placement

Microphone positioning is the single most common hardware mistake candidates make.

  • Never place the mic directly in front of your lips: Heavy exhales during letters P, T, K, and B create popping air bursts called "plosives." Plosives peak the audio input and cause the AI to miss entire syllables.
  • The Proper Angle: Place the microphone two finger-widths away from your face, aligned with the corner of your mouth or slightly below your chin.
  • The Test Center Audio Check: During the equipment check phase, record a sample sentence and listen back. If you hear breath sounds or hissing, readjust before beginning the exam!

2. How to Overcome Test Room Noise Chaos

In most Pearson VUE test centers, up to 15 candidates take the exam in the same room with only thin dividers between workstations. When the Speaking section begins, everyone speaks at the same time. This can be jarring if you are unprepared.

  • Tune out the noise mentally: Focus exclusively on the words on your screen. Do NOT shout; raising your voice alters your vocal pitch and distorts your Pronunciation score.
  • Maintain a steady, confident volume: Speak with a firm, projected voice, exactly as you practiced at home.

3. Keyboard Familiarity & Erasable Notepad Secrets

  • Test Your Keyboard: Check the spacebar, backspace, and keys before starting. If any key sticks, request a keyboard replacement immediately.
  • Keep Your Marker Capped: The erasable markers provided at test centers dry out within 30 seconds if uncapped. Keep the cap on until the exact moment you need to write shorthand during Repeat Sentence or Write from Dictation!
  • Watch the Clock in Reading: The Reading section has an overall timer, not an individual per-question timer. Never spend more than 2.5 minutes on a single question.
